I think it’s funny how when we were kids, we thought our parents knew it all. We thought they were in complete control of their lives and our families, and that they knew how to solve every problem. That they had a set of skills they would teach us as we got older and that once we would be their age, we would know how to face every situation.

And yet, the older we get, the more we realize that they’re just trying to do the best they can to figure out how to deal with life, just like us. There are some questions they don’t have the answers to, and for the most part, they’re really just playing it by ear, much like we are.

And in some ways, that gives me immense respect for them.

Website Helps Icelandic Couples Avoid Incest

As useful and interesting as this website is (I had no idea this was actually a problem in Iceland), I couldn’t help but chuckle.

Really interesting concept, though. It’s like ancestry.com and The Six Degrees of Separation combined.

My grandmother told me that when she was younger, she used to ask her aunt why she decided to have 10 kids.

Her aunt’s response?

“There was no television! We had to do something!”

  • So my grandmother has a medicinal patch she wears daily to help her memory:
  • My Aunt: The doctors told her she can’t wear it in the same place two days in a row.
  • Me: Why, does the medicine concentrate or something?
  • My Aunt: I’m not sure… that’s just what they told me. So yeah, we put it on her boob today, so remind her she can’t put it there tomorrow.
  • My Mom: All right.
  • *my grandmother side-glances at me*
  • My Aunt: Mom, he knows about boobs; he’s old enough.
  • My Grandmother: Yeah, that’s true…
  • *looks at me*
  • My Grandmother: ¡Porque también tú no eres pato!
    • #Hint: In this context pato doesn't mean duck

Talking to my grandmother on the phone

Her: “Thank you for the graduation picture; te ves muy guapo. Me imagíno que las muchachas están sobre ti… I’ll have to watch out for you.”

Me: “Thank you grandma. I’m glad you like the picture, ‘cause that was like two hours before my graduation ceremony, and I had a million things to do, and I was sweating; I felt like a mess.”

Her: “You’re welcome, but it really is nice. You’ve always been handsome, inside and out.”

Me:
